DaRT treatment before surgery for oral cavity squamous cancer

This trial studies DaRT, a treatment given before surgery, to improve outcomes for certain oral cavity squamous cell cancers that can be fully removed. You would be carefully selected using scans and tests to make sure the cancer is in the right place and you can safely receive the treatment.

Who can take part

  • You have a confirmed oral cavity squamous cell cancer diagnosis and have not had any prior cancer treatment for it
  • Your tumor is operable (can be removed with standard curative treatments) and fits specific size/extent limits
  • Your cancer location can be fully covered by the DaRT seeds, including safety margins around the tumor
  • You can get recommended scans (PET-CT and MRI, as planned by the study team) within about 2 weeks before joining
  • Your health tests are adequate (blood counts, kidney function, and blood clotting are within required ranges)
  • If you can become pregnant, you must have a negative pregnancy test and use reliable birth control during the study and for 6 months after

This trial looks at whether giving less (de-escalated) radiation after surgery is as effective and safer for people with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma who had a strong response to treatment before surgery. If you had no remaining cancer or only very small amounts of cancer left in the surgical specimen, this approach may help reduce side effects while keeping control of the disease.
