Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 85 years old
  • Your overall health is in ASA I to III (you are well enough for surgery but not the highest-risk group)
  • You can safely receive an epidural (no bleeding or clotting problems, no serious body infection, and no infection where the epidural would be placed)
  • You can and will consent to the epidural, and you can cooperate with the team to place/use the catheter
  • You can use the patient-controlled pain button (PCEA) and communicate with staff
  • You are not a daily opioid user, and you are not planned to be admitted to the ICU right after surgery
