Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 80 years old
  • You are having elective (planned) total knee replacement surgery for the first time
  • You are in generally good health (ASA physical status I–III, meaning no severe heart or lung disease)
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder or are not on blood thinners that cannot be safely stopped
  • You are not pregnant, not breastfeeding, and do not weigh less than 40 kg (88 lbs) or have a BMI of 40 or higher
  • You are able to learn and use a patient-controlled epidural pump to manage your own pain medication
