  • Born very early (between 24 and 32 weeks of pregnancy)
  • Current weight less than 800 grams (about 1.76 pounds)
  • Getting all milk feeds (breastmilk or formula) for at least a few days
  • No serious infections, birth defects, or gut surgery
  • No severe lack of oxygen at birth (5-minute Apgar score less than 4)
