Testing a device to reduce pain from baby shots

Neonatal Pain

This trial tests a tool called ShotBlocker that may make the Hepatitis B vaccine less painful for newborn babies. Babies will be randomly assigned to get the shot with or without the device, so researchers can see if it helps.

Who can take part

  • Your baby was born at UMass Memorial Medical Center and is being cared for by the nursery team
  • Your baby is full-term (37 to 42 weeks old at birth)
  • Your baby is not in pain from another illness
  • Your baby had a good health score (Apgar above 7) 5 minutes after birth
  • Your baby has had at least one successful feeding by mouth
  • Your baby did not get a circumcision in the last 6 hours
  • You give permission for your baby to get the Hepatitis B vaccine
