Spinal morphine for pain relief after major abdominal surgery

Patients Undergoing Major Laparoscopic Abdominal Surgery

This trial tests whether a single injection of morphine into the fluid around the spine can provide better pain relief after planned laparoscopic or robotic abdominal surgery. If you are having one of several types of major abdominal surgery that lasts at least 2 hours and requires a hospital stay of at least 1 day, this study may be an option.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and can understand the study information.
  • You are scheduled for a major abdominal surgery using small incisions (laparoscopic or robotic) in colorectal, gynecology, liver/pancreas, upper gut, or urology/kidney areas.
  • Your surgery is expected to take 2 hours or more.
  • You are expected to stay in the hospital for at least 24 hours after surgery.
