Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 80 years old.
  • You have kidney stones or stones in the upper ureter with a total size less than 3 cm (about 1.2 inches).
  • You do not have a history of a narrowed ureter or previous stone surgery that involved cutting into the kidney or ureter.
  • You do not have a fever in the week before the procedure.
  • You are not pregnant or menstruating, and you can safely tolerate anesthesia.
  • You do not have severe kidney swelling, abnormal kidney shapes (like horseshoe kidney), or another stone being treated at the same time in the other kidney or ureter.
