Who can take part
- Have kidney stones larger than 2 cm (about the size of a pea), or stones shaped like a staghorn, or stones in the lower part of the kidney smaller than 2 cm
- Have an unusual kidney shape (like horseshoe kidney) or a pocket where stones get stuck
- Have stones that didn't go away after other treatments like shock wave or scope procedures
- Not be pregnant and not have an active urinary infection or untreated blood infection
- Not have a bleeding disorder or be on blood thinners that can't be safely stopped
- Not have a serious heart or lung condition that would make surgery risky
