  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You are awake and alert enough to participate (not heavily sedated)
  • You are not on continuous sedation medication
  • You do not need urgent breathing tube placement within the next 12 hours
  • You are expected to stay in the ICU for at least 48 hours
  • You (or your family) can give informed consent to participate
