Researchers will examine your immune system and may study family members to identify genetic factors that increase infection risk.

Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with or have symptoms suggesting a mycobacterial infection (an unusual type of bacterial infection)
  • You are willing to be referred to or evaluated at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
  • You can provide blood work, urine samples, saliva, or mouth swabs for immune system testing
  • If you have HIV infection, you do not have a nontuberculous mycobacterial infection (a specific type of unusual bacterial infection)
  • Family members may participate by providing genetic samples without undergoing treatment
