Who can take part

  • You/your baby must be in the NICU (newborn intensive care unit).
  • Baby must be very small or very premature: born at 30 weeks or less, or weigh 1500 grams or less.
  • If baby was born at term, delivery must happen at the University of Utah Maternity Care Center without complications.
  • The umbilical cord blood must be collected within the first hour after birth.
  • A parent or guardian must sign informed consent before any study procedures.
  • Baby must not have major birth defects (major congenital anomalies).
