Who can take part
- You are scheduled for surgery that involves taking a full-thickness tissue sample from the stomach and/or upper small intestine (proximal jejunum), or a related abdominal surgery as listed
- There must be no reason your doctors cannot safely take that deeper tissue sample
- You should not have serious heart, kidney, lung, or liver disease that would make surgery unsafe
- Your blood should be able to clot safely (no major bleeding/clotting problem)
- You should be able to move around (not bed-bound) and not live in a nursing facility as your main baseline
- You must be able to understand and sign consent (prisoners and people who can’t consent are not included)
