Who can take part
- You must have symptoms that fit a brain/spinal fluid infection, like severe headache, fever, stiff neck, confusion, or trouble with nerves
- For viral meningitis, your spinal fluid must show more than 10 white blood cells per mL and doctors must not find a more likely cause
- For bacterial meningitis, doctors must find confirmed bacteria in spinal fluid or blood tests (or, if not, spinal fluid must still show more than 10 white blood cells per mL with no better explanation)
- For encephalitis, you need symptoms of brain inflammation lasting more than 24 hours, with brain-related symptoms such as confusion or focal weakness
- For brain abscess, doctors must suspect and then confirm it with imaging and test results (or strong evidence from treatment response or procedures)
- For Lyme nerve infection, you need spinal fluid white blood cell elevation and a specific positive antibody result made inside the spinal fluid
