Brain stimulator study for chronic, hard-to-treat PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

This early-phase study tests a responsive brain stimulation device to help people with chronic PTSD who have not improved with standard treatments. You would be closely followed for years, with regular assessments and device setting changes to see if symptoms improve.

Who can take part

  • Be a man between 25 and 60 years old and able to give consent for a long (4-year) study.
  • Have chronic PTSD as your main problem, confirmed by a study doctor interview and a standardized PTSD symptom checklist.
  • Have had PTSD for at least 5 years and not had a full symptom-free period for at least 6 months in the past 2 years.
  • Your PTSD symptoms must be severe (high scores on the PTSD checklist) and cause major life impact (work or social functioning).
  • Have tried multiple proven PTSD treatments before (at least 3, including at least one PTSD medicine trial and one trauma-focused talk therapy).
  • Be stable on your current PTSD-related psychiatric medicines for 2 months, and agree not to change doses or add new meds for the first 6 months unless a medical necessity occurs.
