Who can take part
- You are 18 years or older and having a planned (not emergency) pelvic operation involving mesorectal removal
- Your surgery is for rectal cancer (low anterior resection or abdominoperineal resection) or proctectomy for inflammatory bowel disease
- You are having this type of surgery by open, laparoscopic, or robotic method
- You have no history of urinary retention after prior surgery or after catheter removal, or it is not untreated
- You do not have a long-term catheter (like a chronic Foley) or a surgically created urine bypass/bladder (like ileal conduit or neobladder)
