Measuring airway acidity using exhaled air breath tests

This trial studies how “airway pH” (how acidic your breathing tubes are) changes after you drink or inhale an alkaline buffer, using special breath measurements. It may help researchers better understand and measure airway inflammation in people with lung conditions or in healthy non-smokers.

Who can take part

  • You’re between 18 and 60 years old
  • You are either healthy with no lung disease, or have a stable acute or chronic respiratory condition
  • If you have lung disease, you must have good lung function on the test that day (FEV1 over 55% predicted) and be clinically stable for 4 weeks
  • You do not smoke, and you have no history of asthma or COPD (if you’re in the healthy group)
  • You are not on continuous oxygen, and you are not on a breathing machine (mechanical ventilation)
  • You can cooperate with breath and sample collection, and you haven’t had a lung flare-up in the last 4 weeks
