This trial studies whether extracorporeal photopheresis can calm disease activity in people with early diffuse skin systemic sclerosis. If you qualify, you would receive this treatment in hopes of improving active skin disease and reducing inflammation.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older and can sign consent
  • You have systemic sclerosis (SSc) confirmed by the study’s standard criteria
  • Your skin disease is early (within 5 years of first non–Raynaud’s symptom) or you have active disease signs
  • Your disease activity is supported by at least one marker (skin score ≥15, tendon “friction rubs,” or inflammation blood tests), not from infection or lung scarring from SSc
  • Your breathing tests and scans are safe enough (not too weak lungs, and no significant pulmonary hypertension)
  • You cannot have several key exclusions like uncontrolled heart/lung disease, active infections (including TB/viral hepatitis flare), low platelets, severe anemia, or prior photopheresis
