This trial studies whether using a monitor-based pain number (called the ANI) to guide pain medicine can improve bowel function after laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer. It may help reduce constipation or slow gut recovery by matching pain treatment to your body’s signals.

Who can take part

  • Be age 19 or older.
  • Plan to have laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer at Gangnam Severance Hospital.
  • Surgery must be planned (not emergency surgery).
  • You must not have had prior open abdominal surgery.
  • You should not have conditions or devices that affect heart rhythm, such as serious arrhythmia or a pacemaker, and no history of heart transplant.
  • You can’t take certain meds that may interfere with the ANI reading (for example: antimuscarinics, alpha-agonists, or beta blockers), and you should not be on long-term opioid pain medicines.
  • You must be able to understand and read the consent form.
  • You should not have cognitive impairment that prevents informed consent.
