Who can take part
- You are admitted to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) for a heart procedure
- You are age 18 or older
- You are scheduled for heart surgery that uses a heart-lung bypass machine for more than 1 hour
- Your surgery is one of these: complex heart surgery, heart valve replacement, or CABG (bypass of heart arteries)
- You can speak and read English well enough for the study
- You (or an authorized representative) can give consent for the study
