Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are having planned (not emergency) heart bypass surgery that uses a heart-lung machine
  • You do not have a high blood lactate level (more than 3 mmol/l) before surgery
  • You have not had this type of heart surgery before
  • You have not had a stroke or significant narrowing of the carotid artery
  • You do not have severe lung disease, kidney disease, or liver disease
