Who can take part

  • You are an adult (18 or older) having a planned total hip replacement
  • You do not have a known allergy to local numbing medicines (local anesthetics)
  • You do not have peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage causing numbness/tingling)
  • You are not taking opioid pain medicines on most days for at least 90 days
  • You do not have reasons you cannot safely receive spinal or regional anesthesia (for example, serious bleeding problems or an infection near the injection area)
