Detox medicine study for primary sclerosing cholangitis

Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis

Treatments studied

Part of Digestive system clinical trials.

This Phase 2 trial studies a “detoxification” approach to improve liver and bile-duct function in people with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). It may help lower abnormal bile flow markers and see whether the treatment is safe for your liver.

Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with PSC for at least 6 months based on a bile-duct scan (ERCP or MRCP).
  • Your blood test shows alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is more than 1.5 times the lab’s upper normal limit.
  • You are either taking ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) at a stable dose for over 6 months, or stopped it at least 4 weeks ago.
  • You do NOT have signs of advanced/unstable liver function (for example, bleeding from stomach veins, fluid buildup in the belly, or confusion from liver disease).
  • You should not need a liver transplant within the next year (based on a risk score), and your lab values must meet study thresholds.
  • You must not have certain other liver conditions, active infections, or recent severe bile-duct infections.

Vancomycin for primary sclerosing cholangitis

This Phase 2 study tests whether the antibiotic vancomycin can improve primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a long-term bile-duct disease. You may be eligible if you have confirmed PSC and certain blood test and safety criteria, and you can follow medication washout rules.

Testing bile-based “mini-liver” samples in PSC and non-PSC groups

This study collects bile and uses it to grow small lab models (organoids) from people with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and from people without PSC. Researchers want to better understand how PSC changes bile cells, which could improve future diagnosis or treatments.

Elafibranor for primary sclerosing cholangitis

This study tests a new medication called elafibranor for adults with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a chronic liver disease. It aims to see if elafibranor can safely help improve liver health when compared to no treatment.
