Exercise and extra protein for swallowing and aging strength

This study tests whether a swallowing exercise program plus a higher-protein intake can improve function in older adults at risk for swallowing problems. It may help by strengthening muscles used for swallowing and supporting overall physical health.

Who can take part

  • Be age 65 or older
  • Have screening results that suggest weakness or higher risk of falls (FRAIL 1–2 or SARC-F 4+ )
  • Have a MoCA score of 26 or higher (a cognitive screening test)
  • Be willing to do all study activities and follow the plan
  • Not have known nerve/brain or structural causes of swallowing trouble
  • Be able to safely eat higher-protein amounts (no kidney disease stage 3 or higher)
  • Be able to safely have an MRI 3T scan (or have no metal/implant issues and can tolerate the scan)
