Who can take part

  • Your hernia must be between 4 and 15 centimeters wide (about 1.5 to 6 inches).
  • You must be healthy enough for both open and minimally invasive surgery, as determined by your anesthesiologist.
  • You cannot have had a previous hernia repair with mesh placed behind the muscle (retromuscular space).
  • You cannot have had a previous hernia surgery that involved separating muscles or cutting a specific abdominal muscle (TAR procedure).
  • You cannot have an active cancer diagnosis, an ostomy (colostomy, ileostomy, or ileal conduit), or serious liver or kidney disease (like fluid in the belly or needing dialysis).
  • You can't be pregnant or need emergency surgery.
