- Able to press a button on a pain pump to get pain medicine on your own
- Able to tell your pain level using a 0 to 10 scale
- No long-term use of strong opioid painkillers before surgery
- No known allergies to any of the study medicines
- No heart block or slow heart rate that causes symptoms
- No condition that prevents getting numbing medicine near the spine, like bleeding problems or infection at the injection site
