  • You must have beta-thalassemia (either the moderate form called intermedia or the severe form called major)
  • Any age or gender is okay
  • You cannot have other types of hemolytic anemias (conditions where red blood cells break down too quickly)
  • You cannot be taking hydroxyurea (a medicine that changes how blood cells are made)
