Who can take part
- You are between 19 and 65 years old.
- You can read, understand, and speak English.
- Your BMI is above 18.5.
- You live within about a 1-hour drive from the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO).
- You exercise less than 300 minutes per week at a moderate or higher intensity over the past 12 weeks.
- You are not pregnant, lactating, or planning to become pregnant in the next 12 weeks.
- You can come to UBCO for two in-person visits.
- You are willing to fast for 12 hours before each study visit and at least once a week before using the portable device.
- You have a smartphone or tablet with reliable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for the 6-week study.
- You agree to limit or avoid cannabis as instructed before study visits.
- You do not have certain health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, thyroid disease, HIV, hepatitis, kidney disease, or polycystic ovary syndrome.
- You do not have untreated high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep disorders, or severe depression.
- You have not used tobacco, nicotine, or medications that affect weight or sleep in the past 6 months.
- You do not work night shifts or travel across more than two time zones in the 2 weeks before or during the study.
- You have not had weight loss surgery or a large bowel surgery.
- You do not have a current or past eating disorder.
- Your alcohol use is low (score under 15 on a screening test).
- You have not lost more than 5 kg in the past 12 weeks or more than 20 kg in the past 3 years.
- You do not have a degree or recent work experience in exercise or nutrition fields.
