Shorter antibiotics for lung and sinus infections

Acute Respiratory Tract Infection

This study tests whether a shorter course of antibiotics (5 days) works as well as the standard 7-day course for common bacterial lung or sinus infections in adults. If you qualify, you would receive either a 5-day or 7-day treatment, and your doctor will monitor your recovery.

Who can take part

  • You are an adult with a new or worsening cough that your doctor thinks is a bacterial lung infection (like pneumonia or bronchitis) OR you have acute bacterial sinusitis.
  • Your doctor has decided you need a specific type of antibiotic (beta-lactam) taken every 8 hours for at least a week.
  • You are not allergic to penicillin or similar antibiotics.
  • You have not taken any antibiotics in the last 2 weeks.
  • You do not have a very severe infection, advanced lung disease, or a weakened immune system.
  • You have not been in the hospital recently or taken part in this study before.
