Who can take part

  • You are scheduled to have coronary bypass surgery or heart valve surgery (only one type of surgery)
  • This is your first heart surgery (you have never had heart surgery before)
  • Your surgery is planned, not an emergency
  • You do not have advanced chronic kidney disease
  • You are willing to receive a blood transfusion if needed
  • You do not have low red blood cell count (anemia), low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), or a bleeding disorder (coagulopathy)
