Studying a powder to reduce bleeding in knee replacement

This trial tests a powder called SURGICEL® that may help control bleeding during knee replacement surgery. People with severe knee arthritis who are having their first knee replacement may be able to join.

Who can take part

  • You have severe knee arthritis that hasn't gotten better with other treatments, and are scheduled for a first-time knee replacement.
  • Your knee is not too bent or deformed (flexion less than 30 degrees, varus less than 20 degrees, or valgus less than 10 degrees).
  • You are having open surgery (not with a robot or computer navigation).
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners that can't be stopped for a short time before surgery.
  • You do not have serious heart, lung, liver, kidney, or blood problems, and have not had a stroke or cancer in the past.
