Who can take part

  • Be between 50 and 85 years old
  • Be in the ICU at one of the two participating hospitals in Beijing
  • Have sepsis with heart muscle weakness diagnosed within the last 24 hours
  • Have a SOFA score between 2 and 12 (a measure of organ failure severity)
  • Not have certain other heart conditions like a recent heart attack or cardiomyopathy
  • Not be pregnant, breastfeeding, or on certain immune-suppressing medications
