Who can take part

  • You must have a type of esophageal cancer called squamous cell carcinoma that has spread or cannot be removed with surgery.
  • You must not have had any previous treatment for advanced esophageal cancer, though if you had chemo or radiation more than 6 months ago and the cancer came back, you may still qualify.
  • You must be at least 18 years old and have an ECOG performance status of 0 or 1 (meaning you are fully active or only limited in strenuous activity).
  • You must not have active autoimmune diseases, HIV, uncontrolled hepatitis B or C, or other serious medical conditions like recent heart problems.
  • Women who can become pregnant and men with partners who can become pregnant must use effective birth control during and for 6 months after treatment.
