Who can take part

  • Your baby weighs 3.3 pounds (1.5 kg) or less or was born at 32 weeks or earlier
  • Your baby is admitted to the NICU within 24 hours (if born at the hospital) or 48 hours (if born elsewhere)
  • You are 18 years or older
  • You live in the study area and plan to stay there for at least 3 months
  • Your baby is getting at least 60 mL of human milk per kilogram of body weight each day at the time the study starts
  • Your baby does not have any major birth defects or serious health problems that would interfere with feeding
