Who can take part

  • You are having urologic surgery (on your kidney, bladder, prostate, etc.).
  • You will receive one of these pain control methods: epidural, paravertebral block, TAP block, IV PCA, or intrathecal morphine.
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder or clotting problem.
  • You do not have an infection at the injection site or a body-wide infection.
  • You are not allergic to local anesthetics (numbing medicines).
  • You do not have a severe spinal problem or injury.
  • You do not have a serious mental health condition that would affect cooperation.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You do not have severe heart or lung disease.
  • You have not been taking high-dose opioids for more than a month.
