Who can take part
- You are between 18 and 60 years old
- You have an unstable injury to the syndesmosis (the ligament connecting the two lower leg bones)
- Your injury is either a closed fracture or an open fracture with only a small skin break (Grade I)
- You have only one ankle injured, not both
- You might also have a broken bone on the outside of the ankle (lateral malleolus) that causes the ankle joint to shift
- You might have a break of both ankle bones (bimalleolar) or three bones (trimalleolar) but the back of the shin bone fragment is small (less than 25% of the joint surface)
