Testing a protein marker for adenomyosis diagnosis

This study measures a protein called L-PGDS (lipocalin-type prostaglandin D synthase) in blood, urine, and tissue samples to see if it can help diagnose adenomyosis (a condition that causes heavy periods and pelvic pain). Researchers are comparing levels in women with and without adenomyosis who are having a hysterectomy, as well as in women without symptoms.

Who can take part

  • You are a woman between 28 and 57 years old (if you have adenomyosis or another uterine condition) or 18 to 57 (if you are in the control group).
  • You have not gone through menopause.
  • You are scheduled for a hysterectomy that removes the uterus but leaves your ovaries (for adenomyosis groups) OR you are having infertility treatment and need an ultrasound (for control group).
  • You have no history of autoimmune disease, asthma, sleep apnea, or cancer.
  • You have not taken pain relievers like ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, or steroids in the last 2 weeks.
  • You are not currently using hormonal birth control (like the pill or patch).

Better diagnosis of endometriosis and adenomyosis using new methods

This study uses advanced imaging and lab tests to better diagnose endometriosis and adenomyosis. Participants must be of European descent, have a clear ultrasound diagnosis, and be undergoing IVF (in vitro fertilization) — specifically a first or second cycle if they have both conditions, or a frozen embryo transfer if they have just one.
