This study tests a non-surgical treatment (pulsed radiofrequency, or PRF) applied to a nerve in the ankle to see if it can reduce long-term pain after a heel bone (calcaneus) fracture. It may be an option if you have had pain for more than 3 months and other treatments haven't worked.

Who can take part

  • You must have had a heel bone (calcaneus) fracture in the past.
  • Your pain must be a 6 or higher on a 0-10 pain scale (0 = no pain, 10 = worst possible).
  • The pain must have lasted at least 3 months after the fracture.
  • You should not have other foot conditions that cause pain, like plantar fasciitis or a heel spur.
  • You must not be pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, or be taking antiplatelet medications (like aspirin or clopidogrel).

Comparing Treatments for Heel Pain With a Heel Spur

This study compares two treatments for chronic heel pain caused by plantar fasciopathy (inflammation of the tissue on the bottom of your foot). If you have a heel spur, you may receive either a steroid injection or a procedure called radiofrequency ablation (which uses heat to calm the pain). The study will also use ultrasound to see how the tissue changes.
