This study compares two treatments for chronic heel pain caused by plantar fasciopathy (inflammation of the tissue on the bottom of your foot). If you have a heel spur, you may receive either a steroid injection or a procedure called radiofrequency ablation (which uses heat to calm the pain). The study will also use ultrasound to see how the tissue changes.

Who can take part

  • You have had heel pain for at least 6 months.
  • Your pain level is at least 4 out of 10 (moderate to severe).
  • You have a heel spur (a small bone growth on your heel) seen on an X-ray or ultrasound.
  • You have already tried at least one treatment for your heel pain, such as exercise, physical therapy, shoe inserts, anti-inflammatory medicine, a night splint, taping, a steroid injection, or shock wave therapy.
  • You have not had a steroid injection or shock wave therapy for your heel pain in the last 3 months.
