- You have aortic dissection or aortic aneurysm
- You are scheduled for total aortic arch replacement using a heart-lung machine
- You are not pregnant and have no severe bleeding disorders
- You have not had heart surgery before, and no other heart procedures planned at the same time
- You do not have atrial fibrillation, recent heart attacks, or unstable angina
