Who can take part
- Must be under 18 years old when starting the study
- Must have a new diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) according to the latest classification
- Must have at least 20% leukemia cells in the bone marrow, or a high number in the blood if bone marrow testing is unsafe
- Must not have certain other types of leukemia (like promyelocytic leukemia or mixed phenotype leukemia)
- Must not be pregnant, have Down syndrome (trisomy 21), or have had other cancer treatments before (except hydroxyurea, steroids, or chemotherapy given into the spinal fluid)
- Must be able to start treatment as outlined in the hospital's AML therapy plan
