Who can take part

  • You are an adult (age 18 or older).
  • You have a physical health level of ASA I, II, or III (basically, you are in good to fair health).
  • You are scheduled for a hip replacement surgery using the posterior approach (a common way to do hip replacement).
  • You will have spinal anesthesia (numbing medicine injected into your back) for the surgery.
  • You are not currently pregnant.
  • You do not have a known nerve disease or major brain disorder.
  • You do not have chronic pain or take strong opioid pain medicines daily.
  • You do not have severe liver or kidney disease, a bleeding disorder, or an allergy to numbing medicines.
  • You are not a minor or a legally protected adult (like someone under guardianship).
