Who can take part

  • You are a medical student or resident doctor at Dartmouth.
  • You have no current or past depression, bipolar disorder, or other psychiatric condition.
  • You have no history of seizures, stroke, or major brain injury that affects thinking.
  • You do not have chronic pain, acute pain in the last 3 months, migraine, or fibromyalgia.
  • You are not taking any medication for a neurological or psychiatric condition.
  • You have not used drugs or alcohol in a harmful way in the last 6 months.
  • You do not have any metal in your body (like pacemaker, cochlear implant, shrapnel) and are not pregnant or claustrophobic.
  • You are able to read and speak English well, and can tolerate brief but intense heat pain on your skin.
