Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (a type of weight-loss surgery) and have been working with a team of obesity specialists.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or higher.
  • Your health is classified as ASA 2 (mild disease) or ASA 3 (severe but not life-threatening).
  • You do not have allergies to the study medications, and you are willing to participate.
  • You do not have uncontrolled psychiatric disorders, brain injury, stroke, or communication problems.
  • If you get the nerve block (paravertebral block), you must not have an infection where the needle goes in. If you get the non-opioid anesthesia, you must not have certain heart conditions.
