Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are in generally good health (ASA I-III, meaning no severe, life-threatening illness).
  • You are scheduled to have ESWL (shock wave treatment for kidney stones) while lying on your stomach.
  • You have no allergies to numbing medicines or sedatives.
  • You do not have a bleeding disorder and are not taking blood thinners.
  • You have no infection in your back where a needle would be inserted.
  • You do not have a major spinal problem that would prevent a safe nerve block.
  • You are not pregnant, do not take strong pain medications daily, and your ESWL is not an emergency.
