Who can take part
- Be in the intensive care unit with acute respiratory failure (sudden trouble breathing)
- Agree to receive a cervical ESP block (a numbing injection near the spine in the neck)
- Have no infection where the injection would be given
- Not have paralysis of the diaphragm (the main breathing muscle)
- Not have a known allergy to local anesthetics (numbing medicines like lidocaine)
