Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older.
  • You are scheduled for a planned (not emergency) chest surgery that will need a chest drain.
  • You do not have an active infection right now.
  • You are not taking medications that weaken your immune system or have a condition like advanced cancer or an organ transplant.
  • You will not be on antibiotics when the drain is taken out.
