Who can take part

  • Your child must be between 1 month and 18 years old.
  • Your child must have a decreased level of consciousness, personality change, or psychiatric symptoms lasting more than 24 hours (in babies and toddlers, this may look like increased fussiness or unusual sleepiness).
  • Your child must have a new seizure, a fever of 100.4°F or higher, or a new neurological problem (like weakness or trouble with movement).
  • A spinal tap must show signs of inflammation (white blood cells in the spinal fluid).
  • There must be no other known cause for these symptoms, such as an infection outside the brain, poisoning, or a metabolic problem.
