Saliva protein levels in gum disease severity and smoking

This study looks at a protein called Mitofusin-1 in your saliva to see if its levels are linked to how serious gum disease is, whether you smoke, and how you respond to treatment. Samples will be taken once before any treatment begins.

Who can take part

  • You have at least 20 natural teeth (not counting wisdom teeth).
  • You are generally healthy with no conditions like diabetes, immune problems, or cancer.
  • You have not taken antibiotics or had gum treatment in the last 6 months.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • If you have gum disease, you are either a current regular smoker (10+ cigarettes/day for 5+ years) or have never smoked.
  • If you are in the healthy control group, you have no signs of gum disease, with shallow gum pockets and no bone loss.
