Who can take part

  • Born between 26 and 32 weeks of pregnancy
  • Birth weight less than 1500 grams
  • Have respiratory distress syndrome (breathing trouble after birth)
  • Born at the study hospital (not transferred from another hospital)
  • No major birth defects, genetic problems, or lung abnormalities
  • Did not need a breathing machine for more than 72 hours after birth
