Who can take part

  • You must be between 18 and 85 years old.
  • You must be having planned (not emergency) lung surgery through an incision in your side (thoracotomy) to remove one lobe (lobectomy).
  • You need to be healthy enough for surgery (ASA class I–III).
  • You must be able to use a pain pump that you control through an IV line.
  • No current infection or open wound near your spine/ribs where the injection will be given.
  • You cannot have taken strong daily opioid pain pills (like morphine) for more than 30 days in the last 3 months.
